Colombe d’Or is a world famous hotel in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. The beautiful inn exudes a wonderful romantic atmosphere due to its unique private collection of modern art. You’ll find the paintings in the bedrooms, in the hallways and in the dining room. You will see beautiful works of art by Picasso, Matisse and Chagall.
Colombe d’Or has an amazing memorial history
The hotel has not always been a hotel. In 1920, a farmer Paul Roux opened a cafe in Saint Paul with three rooms above it. There are many paintings hanging on the walls. This started just after the second world war. International artists such as Pablo Picasso, Kees van Dongen, Joan Miró, Georges Braque and Fernand Léger fled to the South of France. They didn’t pay the bills with money but with their own paintings!
Colombe d’Or is located in a medieval hilltop village of Saint-Paul-de-Vence. You will find the nicest small art galleries and boutiques in this village. The popular museum of modern art (Fondation Maeght) is close to the village! You can also take the bus to the beautiful city of Nice or to the romantic village of Saint Paul.
It’s a place for relaxation, a nice swim and to enjoy the delicious wine.
The rooms all have a wonderful vintage charm because of the furniture and the building. The beds have soft white linen sheets and the room has a beautiful decor. I mean, who doesn’t want to sleep in a room filled with art from a famous artist!
La Colombe d’Or has a beautiful traditional dining room with two characteristic paintings by Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The wonderful dining room is complemented by a romantic and cozy terrace in the summer.
The restaurant of La Colombe d’Or is also called an unforgettable experience, because of the delicious classic French kitchen. They serve food such as steak with gratin dauphinois, burgundy snails and gâteau au chocolat!
